12 Signs Your Body Gives You To Let You Know That Your Liver Is Unhealthy

The liver is an organ located in the upper part of the abdomen, on the right side. It is the biggest solid organ, only partly covered and protected by the ribs. It has a very important role of detoxifying the body which is crucial for our general health. Knowing the signs your body gives you may help you prevent permanent damage of the liver and keep it functioning properly.

12 EARLY SYMPTOMS OF LIVER DAMAGE

UNEXPLAINED FATIGUE

It is the most noticeable sign of liver damage. When you feel constant exhaustion and sleepiness, it means that your body is full of toxins and the liver is not able to process them.

UNEXPECTED  LOSS OF APPETITE

Unexplained loss of appetite that can lead to extreme weight loss is a sign that the food you consume isn’t digesting properly. This happens due to lack of bile which is secreted by the liver.
IRRITATED STOMACH

Nausea and vomiting are the most frequent Indications of liver damage. Although these symptoms can also appear as a result of other health conditions such as food poisoning, motion sickness, migraines, early pregnancy etc., if they continue over a prolonged period of time, that means the liver is sufficiently damaged and it is therefore unable to process toxins.

DIGESTION PROBLEMS

Because it produces the fluid bile, which helps in the emulsification, digestion, and absorption of fats, the liver has an essential role in the digestion processes. Therefore, if damaged, the liver is unable to produce a sufficient amount of this fluid which can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, and fatty food intolerance.

COLOR CHANGES OF THE URINE

Bilirubin is a pigment produced when the liver processes toxins. A high level of this pigment causes yellowing of the skin and may also cause some changes in the color of the  urine (the urine may appear orange, brown, or amber). A damaged liver is unable to get rid of the excess bilirubin in the body, consequently the pigment is processed through the kidneys, resulting in color changes in the urine.

COLOR CHANGES OF THE STOOL

An evident sign of liver damage is the color changes of the stool, which happens due to deficiency of the fluid bile produced by the liver. Thus, for a longer period of time the stool may become clay colored, gray or pale yellow.

JAUNDICE

A medical condition of yellow discoloring of the skin, fingertips tongue and eyes caused by abnormally high blood levels of the bile pigment bilirubin. Moreover, this condition can be a sign that you have problems with your pancreas or your gallbladder.

ABDOMINAL CHANGES

Liver damage can be indicated by unexplained pains or cramping in the lower part of the abdomen and bloating. Liver damage can also be the cause of high blood pressure.

EDEMA

Fluid retention (edema) is a condition where excess fluid  collects in the tissues in your body. It often causes swellings on the feet and lower legs, and sometimes on the arms, hands, face, or other areas of the body. Although the edema can be a symptom of heart failure, kidney problems, lymphatic disease, and hormonal imbalance, it may also be a sign of liver damage.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Damaged liver makes the skin more sensitive. Therefore, if you are experiencing itchy skin, easy bruising, and visible veins it may be a sigh that your liver is damaged.

ABDOMINAL PAIN

Pains in the abdomen, that don’t go away indicate liver damage.

INTESTINAL BLEEDING

Intestinal bleeding is usually associated to liver damage.
